The Manchester BMX track concept was originally brought to life by the British Cycling's Excellence Programme and their need for a training venue. It has also been recognised that for BMX racing to grow in Manchester there was a need for a facility to provide regularly organised sessions, training, racing, promotional days and other activities based around promoting BMX racing and cycling in the Manchester area. |
Early in 2007 Manchester City Council decided to take a leading role in the provision of a BMX racing facility and the staff required to oversee general operations and track maintenance. This much welcomed provision by Manchester City Council will allow Manchester BMX club to concentrate its efforts on promoting the sport of BMX racing and developing local club rider talent.
The Platt Fields BMX facility will in effect be leased to Manchester BMX club up to 3 sessions a week for club practice and race events. Early discussions indicate that gate practice and training sessions could be Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays although this will depend on Manchester BMX club having the manpower to run these training sessions, so all volunteers and support welcome.
The jumps on the track are designed to test a rider's skill and jumping ability, so it's not all about speed. For any cycling activity to keep your attention and make you want to return, it has to be fun. For you to improve your skills, it has to be demanding. To achieve the best results you will need knowledge and commitment. For a parent to bring their kids along, they will require a safe environment free from bullying. Manchester BMX Club aim to provide this and will need to build a community to achieve this.
